How to flip pancakes
If you’ve ever made pancakes, you may have come across the irritation of flipping pancakes. You try to quickly slide the spatula under the pancake and flip it over before it slides off. Sometimes it does slide off and ends of folded or just messed up completely.
There are some tips and tricks to flipping pancakes correctly so that they come out actually looking like pancakes.
Use the right pan
What you choose to cook your pancakes on can make a big difference on the difficulty of flipping. A griddle is the best way to go. With a griddle, you won’t have to worry about the side of a pan getting in the way.
A griddle that you can place on the counter that you plug in would work really well. Still, the type that goes on the stove works too.
If you don’t have any sort of griddle, try to use the widest pan you have with the shortest lip. This will make it easier for you to slide the spatula under the pancake.
Make sure it doesn’t stick
Make sure you use something for the pan to keep the pancake from sticking. You can use butter, oil, or nonstick spray. It’s important to keep it from sticking so that it’s easy to lift from the pan.
Don’t use to much because it will either fry your pancake, burn and accumulate on it, or it might be too slippery and slide off the spatula.
Flip it at the right time
If you flip the pancake too early, it will be really floppy and might break into pieces. Also, even if you do get it flipped over, it won’t cook evenly and the batter will squeeze out the sides making your pancake look deformed.
The right time is when the pancake starts to bubble evenly throughout the pancake.
Proper technique
It seem obvious how to flip pancakes, but you never know, you might need a good refresher course.
To properly flip the pancake, take your spatula and quickly slide it under the pancake. When the pancake is at least 80% on the spatula, lift it up. Quickly flip the pancake over moving your wrist inward and allowing the pancake to land in the same spot it was.
Follow all these tips and tricks, and hopefully you will be able to make beautiful pancakes. If you still find it hard and too difficult to get the right technique down, don’t worry. If your pancakes taste great, disfigured pancakes will do!
