Most people think real maple syrup is so much better than the fake bottled stuff at the supermarket. Personally, I have only come across a few bottles of real maple syrup that I liked. I might be the only one, but I tend to prefer the sugary fake stuff.
However, the bottled stuff from the supermarket still isn’t that great compared to making your own at home. A good pancake syrup recipe is perfect for pancakes or waffles, and it’s really not that hard to make. Plus, it’s not full of all the junk and chemicals that come in a store-bought bottle.
I like to make lots of syrup at once so that I have plenty to last many batches of pancakes. It’s quick to do, but it does make a bit of a sticky mess which is why I like to make a lot so I don’t have to make it often.
Follow the recipe carefully and always keep an eye on your syrup. It can burn easily which isn’t what you want. It is made similarly to other sauces, such as caramel sauce, just a bit easier.
Ingredients
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring
Directions
In a saucepan, stir together the granulated sugar and brown sugar until thoroughly combined. Get out all the lumps of brown sugar so it can melt evenly.
Add the salt and water to the saucepan and stir thoroughly. Heat up the mixture slowly over medium high heat and bring it to a boil. This will take a few minutes so be patient. Stir the mixture constantly so that it doesn’t burn.
Let the mixture boil gently for about 3 to 5 minutes until it has thickened to the consistency you like. Watch it the entire time because it might take more or less time, especially considering how many recipes you’re making.
When it’s as thick as you want it, remove it from the heat and add the vanilla and maple flavoring. Let it cool until it’s just warm and transfer it to a heat resistant container.
Pour your tasty pancake syrup over pancakes, waffles, French toast, or whatever breakfast food you like. Now that you know how to make syrup, you’ll never buy it from the store again.
This easy pancake syrup recipe can be doubled or tripled quite easily. However, the timing may change a little depending on the amounts changed. Over time, you’ll be about to make homemade syrup for pancakes easily and you’ll have a better idea about how long it takes to cook.
